The Heart of the South team have been extremely busy over the last few weeks trying to decide how to reignite our somewhat quirky 5-year old mare Sisania. She won first time out over hurdles in our blue and green silks in 2016, but since that day she hasn’t lived up to expectations and Gary Moore feels he has done all he can with her.
Therefore her Owners decided that a change in scenery was in store and we were looking for a local, small trainer who has had success with temperamental fillies. After a lot of research, the trainer who stood out most was Suzy Smith based in Lewes. Suzy has many years of experience in the racing world after working for several National Hunt trainers and being Assistant Trainer to Mr C Bennett before starting out on her own at the age of 25.
Her early success came in her first season with Material World who won 5 races, was second at the Cheltenham Festival and had many Black Type placings which firmly put Suzy’s name on the map. Many notable successes followed including Invicta Lake (Grade 3 winner), Little Boy Boru (2nd in the Listed Lanzarote Hurdle), Golden Bay (Listed hurdle winner) and Missoula (Royal Ascot Stakes winner.) There also isn’t a Plumpton or Fontwell meeting that passes without a Suzy Smith runner on the card!
Suzy has a predominately female team behind her which we are hoping will work wonders with Sisania who is found to have responded better to females both on and off the ground. The filly will also be able to gallop on the endless amount of Sussex Downs, and a smaller operation with some individual attention yet structured routine might just be what Sisania needs!
So far we are really impressed with the attention to detail Suzy provides, and we hope her hard work with Sisania is rewarded when she returns to action over hurdles in March. This could be the start of an exciting partnership!
