Friend and trainer
Philip Hide is a longstanding friend of Heart of the South, riding winners for us in his jockey days and playing an instrumental role in the careers of our horses 8 time winner Fruity O’Rooney and previous dual winner Shamahan. We are delighted that he has now set up as a trainer in his own right. He has a beautiful yard of 21 modern stables at Findon in West Sussex, where he uses the famous Gifford family gallops.
Despite his National Hunt background Philip primarily trains flat horses and always has a clear plan of how things work. He has an interest in the scientific approach and his horses are regularly bloodtested and monitored to build up a better picture of their health. He got off to a great start, posting a first win from only his second runner! Unfortunately Philip has also experienced his share of bad luck, with the yard coming down with a nasty virus in early 2014, but he continued to work hard and things are now looking up again.
We were delighted to provide Philip with one of his first horses back in 2013, Zambeasy, who has won 5 fantastic races and looks to improve further in 2017. Philip also trains Onehelluvatouch, who won convincingly in 2016 and looks to be a nice 4-year old, and 3-year old gelding Dragons Voice.
Time for owners
As well as his attention to detail when looking after his horses, Philip and his wife Michelle really know how to look after owners too. After a chilly morning on the gallops we are always treated to amazing bacon sandwiches at Philip’s house and both always have so much time for owners. The small setup and individual attention really suits some horses (and owners!) and Heart of the South predicts a bright future for Philip.
Read below some testimonials from our owners about their visits to Philip’s yard:
We have enjoyed every minute with Zambeasy, he has given us some fantastic times. Philip has been enthusiastic and welcoming and we like how you can see how much the horse means to him. The attention to detail and race selctions have been brilliant.

We were very impressed with the set-up and the personal touch provided at Philip Hide’s stables. This was our first experience of a stable and gallop visit and we really enjoyed ourselves. Everyone at the yard made us feel very welcome. I would like to say a special thank you to Michelle, she explained a lot of interesting points to us about racing and what to expect, but most of all her hospitality was amazing and she made us feel part of the “team” from the moment we met her.

I have been involved in horseracing for many years and racehorse ownership for over 10 years and have had horses with 8 different trainers in that time. I met Philip over 3 years ago when I went to his yard to see Zambeasy and join the Heart of the South syndicate. During this time I have found Philip to be an excellent trainer and is meticulous and conscientious in all aspects of his training set up. He and all his staff are welcoming and approachable at all times and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
Terry Francis, owner in Zambeasy
We have been very impressed with the care and passion Philip and his staff show for our (and all) horses at Cissbury Stables. Philip is always willing to discuss in detail any aspects of horse care and racing, and can always be relied upon to give a clear and honest opinion. You can tell that he really cares for all his horses. We are always made very welcome at Cissbury Stables, which is a pleasant, homely stable set up. We feel that Philip has a vast knowledge and skills in his horsemanship, and fully deserves the success that will surely follow. We will hopefully be sharing in his triumphs, and continued success. Philip will always be the trainer for us.

I am very pleased to hear that you will continue to support Philip next year, he deserves to do well and it would be good to see him with some more horses and more winners, he helps to make the experience of being with HOTSR more enjoyable, a view I know shared by many of us. Also a big thank you to you for all your hard work, its been almost a year since I joined HOTSR and its been great fun.
