Everyone who follows racing in Sussex knows about the Moore family. Son of Brighton trainer and car dealer Charlie Moore, Gary is the one of the most successful dual purpose trainers in the country.
Family affair
Ably assisted by wife Jayne (herself formerly a successful amateur jockey) and offspring Jamie, Josh and Hayley who help at the yard daily, Gary runs the hardest working team around. He produced miraculous results training from a home built yard opposite Brighton Racecourse for several years and in 2007 he started training from Cisswood Racing Stables near Horsham, which is now his main yard. This yard offers the style and facilities that his hard work deserves, with top-class training facilities and stabling for 100 racehorses set in 180 acres of beautiful countryside and woodland. The expanse of land enables us to turnout horses to grass daily when required.
Sire on Fire!
Gary has always been well known for his success in the big handicap hurdles and is also one of the country’s leading all weather trainers. However this all changed, when the world class Sire De Grugy came along! His best horse without question, this leading 2-mile chasing sensation has been a revelation over the last few seasons winning: the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase twice, Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase, Grade 1 Clarence House Chase, Grade 1 Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Grade 1 Celebration Chase twice.
Goshen
Currently the yard’s stable star is 5yo Goshen who is a 7-time winner and has provided some great days out at the races for the team and his Owners.
Goshen won 3 races on the flat in an impressive fashion before winning his next 3 over hurdles – combined pulling away by 96 lengths clear – before heading to the Cheltenham Festival! He looked set to be an imposing winner of the Grade 1 JCB Triumph Hurdle before devastatingly unseating at the last hurdle! It was great to see him bounce back at Wincanton however to win the Grade 2 Betway Kingwell Hurdle and we are sure he will bounce back to winning ways again this season for connections
Gary’s other high profile success stories include the phenomenal Ar Mad who won the Grade 1 Racing Post Henry VIII Novices’ Chase and the Grade 2 Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, Antony the winner of the Grade 3 Sodexo Gold Cup in 2016, Grade 3 winner Ubak, Bergo who won the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, Dutch Masterpiece who won the Group 2 Flying Five Stakes at Curragh, and Mourilyan who was third in the Melbourne Cup. Rarely a meeting at Fontwell or Plumpton goes by without a Gary Moore trained winner and year in, year out he is leading trainer at these tracks.
Made to feel welcome
Owners with Gary are always welcome at the yard to watch their horses work, or simply to give them a cuddle and a carrot. Gary, Jayne, Jamie, Josh & Hayley are always about for a chat and offer a fascinating insight into how a big racing stable operates.
As his regular television interviews convey, Gary Moore is a real character and some of his training methods are steeped in tradition too (wait to you see the cement mixer that mixes up all the horse feed!) Owners can often find the ‘hands on’ Gary riding out, mucking out or grooming. We certainly wouldn’t have it any other way.
Josh Moore
As of May 2024 we are so thrilled to have Josh Moore joining the license with his father! Josh is a huge part of the operation at home already and to have his contribution towards racing planning and the day-to-day running of Cisswood Stables will be valuable.
