Meet Our Trainers

Expert trainers dedicated to developing our horses’ potential

We have carefully selected our racehorse trainers not only for their training ability but also for the first class care, passion and dedication they give to our horses. Each of our trainers treat the horses as an individual, meeting their required needs to reach their full potential.

It is also very important to us that our Owners can visit their horses whenever they wish (in fact we encourage regular visits to deepen your ownership experience) and each of our trainers offer a genuine open access policy to their yards – give us a call to arrange a visit!

James Tate

Newmarket-based trainer James Tate has a wealth of experience with racehorses, and he is also a qualified vet which is a massive plus! Saddling over 500 winners, James has enjoyed Group success at some of the top meetings and has a brilliant track record with his youngsters. He is a trainer we really enjoy working with as he leaves no stone unturned when it comes to his horses training and race planning.

Harry Derham

After spending 6 invaluable years as assistant to Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls, Harry took his trainers license out in 2022 where his first runner from his Lambourn based yard was a winner! He is quickly establishing himself as an upcoming National Hunt trainer and has already trained Black Type winners Queens Gamble and Brentford Hope. It is a fun ownership experience with Harry!

Gary & Josh Moore

Moore is a very well-known and well-respected family name in the British racing community. Gary is a true horseman and his experience with horses is second to none. He trains over 100 flat and National Hunt horses at his impressive 180-acre West Sussex based yard and as of 2024 does so alongside his youngest son and ex-National Hunt jockey Josh Moore, who adds a modern element to their training approach.

A family steeped in racing

Ably assisted by wife Jayne (herself formerly a successful amateur jockey) and offspring Jamie, Josh and Hayley who help at the yard daily, Gary runs the hardest working team around. He produced miraculous results training from a home-built yard opposite Brighton Racecourse for several years and in 2007 he started training from Cisswood Racing Stables near Horsham, which is now his main yard. The whole family plays a part in the day-to-day operation as of May 2024 Gary holds a joint license with talented former jockey & son Josh.

On the track

Gary is one of the most successful dual-purpose trainers around to date and has enjoyed plenty of victories in both spheres. He’s enjoyed Glorious Goodwood winners in the form of Junkanoo and Group winner Novus, and his most memorable wins in the NH world come from multiple Grade 1 winning legend Sire De Grugy, the quirky yet very talented Grade 2 winner Goshen and Welsh National hero Nassalam. He has had runners at nearly every big meeting in the racing calendar and is particularly well known for supporting and having plenty of success at local tracks such as Fontwell and Plumpton. His first winner on the joint license with Josh was Heart of the South Racing owned Kotari at Salisbury!

Cisswood Stables

For almost 20 years Gary has trained out of the 180 acre establishment that is Cisswood Stables. With over 100 stables, Gary & Josh also have plenty of facilities including 4 private gallops (differentiating between distances and surfaces), a horse walker, a treadmill, plenty of turnout space (the horses are always turned out) and top of the range massage/physio treatment. He also has a woods adjacent to his yard which is fantastic for walk/trot days and to give the horses a change of environment.

Assistant to Champion Paul Nicholls

After beginning his career as a jockey Harry enjoyed 3 years in the saddle riding 50 winners including Cheltenham Festival winner Salubrious before he retired from the saddle and joined the Paul Nicholls team. Here he spent 6 invaluable years as Assistant Trainer to Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls where he worked tirelessly with a grounding that has set him up for success. His time at Ditcheat saw the team win 3 Trainers’ Championships.

Commencing his training career

In 2022 at just aged 30, Harry took out his own trainers licence and sent out his first runner on Boxing Day at Huntingdon, Seelotmorebusiness, who also ended up being his first winner! 7 more wins followed from only his first 30 runners which isn’t a bad starting record at all! Harry has since enjoyed several doubles and trebles and enjoyed Listed success with Ascending Lark, Brentford Hope and Queens Gamble. He has also had horses representing him at some of the top NH meetings!

Upper Farm Stables

Harry trains out of the picturesque Lambourn based yard, Upper Farm Stables . Nestled amongst 90 acres of Berkshire countryside, Harry has many facilities to cater for the horses including his own gallop (as well as the Jockey Club Lambourn gallops and schooling grounds), an outdoor school, a schooling arena, and turnout space. It is a very peaceful location for the horses to enjoy and indeed many of them do thrive having their summers holidays here! We love visiting the yard with Owners and are always well looked after.

Family History of Racing

James grew up surrounded by the sport of racing. His father and uncle were successful jockeys before becoming top trainers (James’ uncle was Champion Trainer 3 years in a row!) and James married Lucinda in 2004, daughter of retired trainer Len Lungo! James immersed himself into horseracing at an early age and rode his first point-to-point winner at the age of 16 before enjoying many more winners in this sphere and as an amateur jockey.

Qualified Veterinarian

For us this is where James offers a completely different approach to training racehorses as he is also a qualified vet. He spent 6 years assisting Mark Johnston as a senior veterinary surgeon and with his invaluable experience, knowledge and expertise, James couldn’t be better qualified for training! To be able to understand the anatomy and physiology of the horse and to diagnose injuries or problems quickly and accurately enables James to treat horses safely and effectively which is a huge advantage.

Jamesfield Place Stables

James trains at the beautiful Jamesfield Places based in Newmarket, Suffolk which was built in 1988 before he moved in during 2011. James was quick to have success in his new yard having his first winner just two months after arriving and he’s since gone on to train over 500 winners! James has the facilities to cater to all of the horses needs thanks to an equine swimming pool (with tidal motion), an indoor tapeta school, lunge ring, turn-out paddocks, American barn style stables and the numerous gallops on offer in Newmarket.
