On Friday 10th November, 25 Heart of the South Racing owners enjoyed our second Owner Event of 2017 to the newly built Sussex Equine Hospital in Ashington, West Sussex for a very interesting tour. The veterinary team moved to this new purpose built practice in the Summer of 2017, and it is a fantastic set up with lots of equipment and medical advances.
Director Matt Waterhouse spent a great deal of time with owners, giving us a tour of the state of the art facilities which included seeing where a bone scan takes place and the hefty equipment that is used for this, the MRI scanning room, the indoor trot up strip (ideal for when there are wet conditions outside thus risk slipping over) and the surgery room which was most fascinating. The way these 71 stone thoroughbreds are prepped and lifted for surgery (by a harness!) and cared for afterwards is outstanding and it was a really fascinating insight into how this takes place.
We had a tour of the outside facilities too which included a trot up strip, and a sand school for which horses recovering from injury/surgery could be in hand walked, and we also got to give some attention to the patients in the hospital!
It was a real eye opener into what these Equine hospitals do for horses, and we were in complete awe of the amazing work that goes on behind the scenes.
We were thoroughly well looked after, and Matt explained everything from the minute a horse arrives at the hospital, to the minute they leave and he was more than happy to answer any questions we had. We would strongly recommend the Sussex Equine Hospital, and thoroughly enjoyed our morning with them!
