Suzy Smith was a new trainer to our books in 2018 and trains our somewhat quirky 5-year old mares Sisania and Onehelluvatouch. She has only had the fillies a matter of months but has managed to get them both back in the winners enclosure and we hope to see them continue to improve.
Early success
Suzy has had several years of experience in the racing world after working for several National Hunt trainers and being Assistant Trainer to Mr C Bennett before starting her own career at the age of 25.
She enjoyed early success during her first season when Material World won 5 races, was second at the Cheltenham Festival and had many Black Type placings which firmly put Suzy’s name on the map. Many notable successes followed including Invicta Lake (Grade 3 winner), Little Boy Boru (2nd in the Listed Lanzarote Hurdle), Golden Bay (Listed hurdle winner) and Missoula (Royal Ascot Stakes winner.) There also isn’t a Plumpton or Fontwell meeting that passes without a Suzy Smith runner on the card!
Old Lewes Racecourse
Suzy trains out of the picturesque County Stables, located on the South Downs. It is a breathtaking location and was in fact the old racecourse. There are miles of open countryside all around and plenty of open space to be used at their disposal.
Suzy’s grass gallops are part of the old racecourse itself and are fantastic for getting the horses fit and used to the sensation of the turf and because of its width, horses can be worked in groups which is good preparation for the races. Suzy also has personal use of a stiff uphill 1 mile all weather gallop as well as schooling hurdles and fences.
